Research

POSSIBLE CONCEPTS OF RESEARCH;

Take photographs of food (mainly toast) and burning writing or images into it. I could use a stencil to do so and scrape ’10 YEARS’ into it.Create a butler out of fundamental forms to advertise my dinner party on posters.Butler (cartoon form) opens a cloche with Hepworth’s original pieces of work/sculptures falling out of it with the number ‘10’.Garden party- All guests bring empty bottles/tins/cans etc to create their own sculptures, in a competition.Make jelly and put paper letters of ‘10th anniversary’ inside it.

I will take these concepts into consideration when carrying out my experiments and testing further hypothesis’.

My research will be based around my initial concept of an informal dinner party where everyone is welcome and Hepworth’s previous celebration for their 5th anniversary. Doing so will encourage and form sensible ideas that fit similar criteria’s in the research suitable enough for this honour.

HEPWORTH GALLERY 5TH ANNIVERSARY-

The 5th anniversary had many opportunities and different ways of celebrating, for example:

A £30,000 cash prize for sculpture.

They planned and accomplished a brand new 6000 square metre PUBLIC garden.

They received ‘The Tim Sayer Bequest’, meaning they can display his British modern and contemporary art within their gallery.

Opened a survey of a new commission in terms of photographic work created by Martin Parr.

Introduced Stanley Spencer’s paintings regarding surveys, after 15 years.

Tim Sayer Bequest exhibitions, Kettle’s Yard collection and an entire exhibition of Barbara Hepworth’s previous work were all displayed at ‘Philip’s new European headquarters In London.

The Hepworth Wakefield, designed by award winning architect, David Chipperfield on 21st May 2011 and was congratulated by hearing about their 1000000th visitor in December 2013.  The gallery, since then, has contributed £20 million to the local economy, welcoming another 1.4 million visitors. Many admired royalties of Wakefield had openly announced the galleries success, using words of pure pride- David Liddiment, Chair of The Hepworth Wakefield stated, ‘I’m immensely proud of what the team has achieved.’ And Simon Wallis, Director of The Hepworth Wakefield, ‘As we look at our 5th anniversary, I am delighted and inspired by how much we have achieved and the large, engaged and loyal audience we’ve built for our programme.’   With Hepworth Galleries wishes to produce a beautiful garden on their premises, a few of the most experienced universal garden designers and professional landscape architects were eager to participate in the entire procedure. Here are some of the designers who took part in every inch of Hepworth Riverside Garden; Christopher Bradley Hole & Brita von Schoenaich (joint submission), Tom Stuart-Smith, Cleve West, and Peter Wirtz. All designers were gratefully awarded 16 gold medals and 6 coveted ‘best in show’ at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. I feel that Hepworth had engaged and included the audience massively, allowing them to discuss and have an input on the concept of the public garden, in terms of feedback. The residents and visitors gave their ideas and were put in a competition against one another. The winner was announced in January 2016.

An exhibition of thee Barbara Hepworth, based around her ‘late works’, was proudly displaced in Phillips, London n July 2016, encouraging and supporting the great celebration of The Hepworth’s 5th year anniversary.

I feel as though doing this section of research has helped me gather concepts as influence from what the gallery did to celebrate for their 5th anniversary and I will take this into consideration when prepping my ideas together.

WHAT A GOOD POSTER LOOKS LIKE;

<PAGE 24>

The basis of this research is to give me some encouragement to go out of my comfort zone when experimenting with multiple concepts inn terms of poster designing. This entire page reminds me of imagery that would be displayed on a billboard. Both posters have an excellent use of photography to encourage viewers, drawing them in from a simple yet extremely effective image that represents the entire subject meaning of the poster. DESIGN; NB: STUDIO, UK.

<PAGE 27>

This particular poster was designed for Ecuador Creative Labs by Caracas-based Miguel Vasquez of Masa design studio, to promote a motion type of graphics workshop of which was based in the Ecuadorian universities. The concept of this displayed image were layered graphic elements, to form an unusual image of some sort. All images were said to be ‘collected from magazines from the 1960’s’. Each individual image were either cut out or scanned. DESIGN; MASA, VENEZUELA.

DESIGN; ANDY MUELLER, USA.

This section of the book caught my eye immediately as I’m aware this design is for a skateboarding label, Lakai, which I with-hold an incredible passion for. Andy Mueller is also said to be an Art Director. These series of photographs and illustration encourages Mueller’s sense of direction and style within the artistic designing industry. As stated in the book, he is ‘surrounded by skateboarding and shoes all day’ which has clearly transferred onto his physical work.

DESIGN; ANDY MUELLER, USA.

This display of imagery reminds me of optical illusions and scale which our class studied in our first year of graphic design, which is why this appealed to me the most so far because this topic I enjoyed drastically. These creations were designed for The Quiet Life, a niche clothing company that Mueller runs with his wife. I feel as though the idea of the paint bush painting words on the page could be a clever way of advertising The Hepworth, using food and drink as the main subjects. Mueller stated, ‘I liked the idea of the city growing out of the paint brush, which was a doodle that got turned into a poster’ proving that any experimentation and creative concepts are worth doing.

DESIGN; ANTHONY BURRILL, UK.

These entire pages took me back to high school, when I studied fine art, on the topic of pop art. This particular style of art gradually became my favourite due to it being so bold and alert, making you fascinated in the artist’s work almost instantly. The series of posters shown to the left were ‘self-published’ to be sold on his very own website.  Burrill stated that, ‘collected scraps of paper, packaging and stickers’ proving that there are more materials to use and experiment within graphics to grasp and achieve an outcome of creative and imaginative designs-experimentation is vital.

On the left bottom corner there’s a design of a giant mouth open, with a quote of ‘EAT IT ALL’ beside it. I feel this fits perfectly with the criteria of my initial concept of the dinner party and I could use this as inspiration when experimenting with different materials and mediums etc.

DESIGN; THE KITCHEN, UK.

London based designers, The Kitchen, created advertisement posters for ‘Habitat’s spring and summer range offers. They came up with a slogan, ‘ANALYSE YOUR SPACE’ inspired by Hermann Rorschach, the pschologist. Each image has had the Habit’s original products to form these advertisements. This includes; lighting, storage and a generic poster for the final campaign.

WHAT IS A BANQUET;

STUDY.COM

https://study.com/academy/lesson/banquet-service-standards-types-definition.html

A banquet in my opinion is a form of celebration that regards food and beverages, usually taking place in a dining hall. However, it is said that there are a variety of different places to participate in a banquet, some being; Buffet, Reception, Food stations, Cafeteria style, Plated, Family-style and Pre-set etc. The initial example of a banquet service which a colossal amount of people will have experienced would be at a wedding. This is because at weddings, they usually celebrate with friends and family in a dining hall of some sort where food service is available for the guests present.

A banquet service can be flexible around the style of the event people are celebrating for and is considered using things such as; the amount of people attending, the reason for celebration and the menu etc.

Here are some examples above, of banquets taken place. As you can see, whoever organises and decorates the room/s take pride in their work and arrangement is considered carefully and thoroughly- depending on the theme of celebration.

HOW IS A BANQUET USED TO CELEBRATE?

Due to a banquet being a formal feats/ get-together in terms of celebrating and honouring someone or something. It allows a group of closely selected people to enjoy quality time with one another by enjoying a formal number of meals, along with speeches of congratulates.

DINNER PARTIES- MAIN RECIPES;

BBC GOOD FOOD

For this section, I will be grasping an insight on what is the best suited foods to present at a dinner party, and I will consider this when organising my arrangements for my dinner party. This will encourage me to look further into ‘posh’ dinner parties and what people typically choose to have at their own.

All of these meals ARE relevant as when planning and forming my poster I will NEED to consider what food will fit the criteria of the appropriate audience I am advertising this celebration too. This will give me a rough idea of food I can portray on my dinner table in Photoshop. The ratings help me to decide what people usually prefer to eat at dinner parties, also supporting me when making decisions during my experimentation, mocking up, and final designs.

THE FUTURIST COOKBOOK: 11 RULES FOR A PERFECT MEAL AND AN ANTI-PASTA MANIFESTO CIRCA 1932

BRAIN PICKINGS

I did some borderline research on the ‘Futurist Cookbook’ which guides you in the right direction of a perfect dinner menu layout. The purpose of this research was to help with the arrangement of the food and dinner plates on the table for one of my possible experiments. However, this didn’t seem to help as I changed my mind on the subject of the advertisement and this research didn’t fit its criteria.

JUDY CHICAGO-THE DINNER PARTY;

BROOKLYN MUSEUM: THE DINNER PARTY BY JUDY CHICAGO

BROOKLYNMUSEUM.ORGhttps://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/dinner_party

The dinner party was a major icon to represent the 1970’s feminist art and was a milestone in the 20th century art, presented as the centre piece of Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, is organised. The Dinner Party consists of a ceremonial banquet on a triangular shaped dining table with exactly 39 plates and utensils, each being a representation of a high up and important woman from history times. This display is permanent to honour 1,038 women when enhanced at Herstory Gallery exhibitions. The importance of this research will depend on how far I take my concept of a dining table to celebrate Hepworth’s 10th anniversary.
